  • Diversion 165 being pushed?

    Just had an interesting thing happen I've never seen. There's a million things this beginner has never seen so I'll offer this one first.

    I'm building an alloy dry sump oil pan. I've seam welded all the .063 sides with some success, nothing to buy my retirement on.

    Today I attempted to weld this .063 sump to the 1/2 inch flange. I suspect it is beyond the capacity of the 165 but I thought I'd give it a try.

    First little 1.5 inch test seemed to work well.

    I brought out some C clamps and a bit of hammer to get it back into line and the second try went to **** immediately!

    The reduced section cup split and fell out leaving just the torch exposed?

    Is this typical and normal degradation or have I done something way wrong??

    Well that ramble didn't make much sense did it?

    I was startled by the cup splitting apart at the transition at the large diameter.

    Do these things fail, an expendable piece? Like tungstens and filler rods should I be looking to replace cups on a regular basis? Or did I overheat, undergas something to cause this failure?

      I have had an experience similar with lava cups at higher temps if you don't have the tungsten out far enough. It's also possible the cup was already cracked and the heat from welding caused it to split.

        FWIW, you can get gas cups (like most other things) cheaply on ebay.

          Although not super common I have had pcs. of cups break away especially when using torches at max or beyond. Yes you are pushing the 165 & it's torch. Just get some spares & try to watch the duty cycle. Your torch if used like this will die prematurely but you do what you gotta do.

          I used a Lincoln tig 175 for a long time & welded stuff like you are doing. Went through a few torches but until I could upgrade it's what I had.

            Watch the duty cycle is good advice! I notice the cooling fans running considerably longer now.

            I'm using a 500 Watt halogen lamp to preheat the area. Not sure how helpful it is but it helps cook my gloves a lot sooner! OUCH!

            I bought the Diversion specifically for this fabrication. Learning it is going slowly but it's going....

            I gotta go back to the books, I don't think my tungsten is out far enough.
