  • Serial numbers

My shop was broken into and they stole my plasma (spectrum 375) and 2 140 wire feeders. And many other things.
I reported the theft to miller and then found some douche selling my plasma on craigslist. The police went to his house after I arraigned to buy it.
He was on probation so they needed no search warrant.
It was my plasma with a special handle I installed on it.

The serial numbers were gone and the police say they need serial numbers to match my reciept.

My question: Are there any serial numbers under the case cover?

Side note: It happened on saturday night. So on a hunch I stayed at the shop thinking they might return before monday morning. They did!

They were backing up to my shop door and i got the plate number before i could shoot them in the head.
When i went to the craigslist house - that car was in the driveway.
Yet the police are treating me like the criminal.

There should be sn stickers a few places under the cover. I removed my cover and painted my name inside where i knew where it was. I had a chainsaw 30 years ago that walked. 3 screws later and my name was written under a removable badge. Well it worked as i got the saw back not once but twice....Bob

that would have been the best bet. nobody would miss these losers. i havnt done it in a while but i used to take pictures of all my stuff and numbers or special markings in case something dissapeared. i think i should get the camera out and update my files

Thier are several stickers under the cover, however most thieves remove those too. so yes its best to use one of those electric tool markers to etch the serial, or your mark on one of the aluminum plates. As theives can't remove them.

            Thanks for the replies

I'm hoping the serials are inside.
If not, my fingerprints will be inside and my lawyer said that will work.
It's a shame that I have to get a lawyer to get my stolen crap back.

Who is more likely to own the plasma cutter::

Owner of an elevator company or a meth head?
Guy with w/ receipt to the exact model or the guy who was caught breaking into my shop?

I'm not sure who is worse - the police or the criminals.

From some of the crap I've seen lately, the only difference between the two is the uniform.

Putting your name inside the welder is a good idea BUT thieves will probably look for something like that and remove it. Along with that put some numbers or a mark unique to only your piece of equipment that the crooks will think is just part of the welder if found. Drill a hole somewhere that a factory unit would not have and take pictures or something like that.

Yep thats an even better idea!, through a extra hole through the case like Monty said. Will not hurt your warranty and you have verification that its yours with a simple picture. Great idea!

                    Update

Went to the police station to view "the property".
My plasma cutter and 2 of my wire feeders were there.
Took the cover off the plasma and the serial# was there.

Saw more of my things in the photos the police took.
Told em there was more of my stuff there.
I had to threaten to sue them to get them to go back!
After throwing a chit fit, they agreed to go back. And I got the rest of my stuff.

                    Thanks for all the tips.

Here is my tip to you all -
The police are not there to help.
                    They don't care.
They will treat you like the criminal and it is disgusting.
