  • Loader bucket cutting edge?

    Does anybody know what kind of steel the Loader bucket cutting edges are made from. somebody called me and asked as they want to make some tools/tooling out of it. A general type if any one knows? thanks

    All depends where they come from, some are made of high carbon steel, some are made of hardox or manganese. it's hard to know unless you know where or which manufacturer, Cat or john deere or volvo ?

        It is known as QT 100 meaning Quenched & Tempered. Also knwn as AR plate or Abrasion resistant plate. Our supplier cuts them out of large sheets to our specs. By specs I mean lenght,width & thickness.We use them on our buckets for cutting edges.We also get them to flame cut a 45 on leading edge for cutting edge. Before welding in place some preheat is required to prevent weld cracking because of the hardness of material.

          That should help them a lot, as the last time I worked on a loader bucket it was right after the ark docked and the buckets were made out of wood. I believe he has one that he wants to make punches and such out of.

            made lots of new cutting edges for blades and seen many different grades of steel used. i mainly have used AR 400 or QT100. it does all depend on what the service is.
            i know CAT uses "ultra wear" brand to line blades and cutting edges now too. ultra wear does not weld nice, special procedure and still looks like crap.....

              should mention too that AR and QT plate are different.... not the same plate. preheat for both and
              at least a 8018 or 11018 rod should be used. hard surface weld with a stoody 19 or something
              close depending on application.

                I used to haul steel on a flat bed into Kansas City and it was call AR500 and was work hardened. Mark it. cut it and your done, there are no re-cuts or retries on that stuff. They used the stuff to make road grader cutting edges and bucket teeth for excavators and track hoes too. Hard to work with and expensive as the ****ens but performs well in an abrasive environment. Able to with stand direct hits to the cutting edge with no loss of edge or deformation. Just gotta be 100% positive where you want the bolt holes and countersinks so they line up after welding, cutting and sharpening the edge. Good luck man, hope this helps. I got the steel from Birminham steel in Florence Tenn and Namasco in south eatern Georgia.

                  Yes The information will help him get an idea of hardening and tempering the tools after he makes them. He was given a couple of pieces, of unknown origin other than bucket edge material?

                    Try some fluxcore ultracore from lincoln, we use the ultra wear grader bars to line our dozer blades, welds like butter.
