It is a lot easier to find the sweet spot on an SAE using that technique.
Before the SAMs came out I always tried to grab an SAE-400 if one was available, you can dial in a wire feeder really quick on an SAE.

      More Info

I had lunch with my friend today and got more info on that SA-200.
He said he bought it as a rental return and it was rented out for two weeks.
He also said 10 yrs. ago he took it in and had it fixed (?) and repainted, about $300worth. He said he paid $1200 for it new.

The fixed part might explain the alternator and the spin on oil filter.

He said there is a dent in the hood, (bought it that way) but I can not see it for the dust.
One bracket that holds the hood on at the face plate end is missing, the other side is loose. I never looked at the bracket on the inside of the machine, to see how it is made. On the outside it appears to be a rod with end smashed flat with a hole for the bolt. In the parts book they are called angle brackets.

As far as price he will get back to me.

      Thanks again,
      Bob

Are they the “L” bracket type? Stumpf has them $1.69. 13th item down right side column.

            Great looking machine!
Wonder why Lincoln used different dial pointers for the red faces? That machine your looking at has different pointers than mine, look at Stump's home page, all those red face welders have the same pointers as mine. But I've seen other red faces with the same pointers, as the one you're looking at.

This is to hard, still don't how to do it.

The exhaust manifold says red seal on it, the pipe is brazed to the manifold, and the muffler is welded to the pipe. So that means the hood will not come off.

So after all this what do you guys think?

I'd start that thing up, take a port a band and wack that muffler off above the hood, and get a rain cap or 90° turn. People run straight pipes all the time. My 1550 RPM machines have mufflers, but the 1400 RPM machines do not. The 1400 RPM machines are quieter!

It will be just a toy for me. I just want to see what all the fuss is about.
I'll take it out and play with it once in a while, That's if I get it, if it's gold I might pass.
One of the pointers (fine adj) is smaller than the other, both are rusty.
It's a 1/2 mile down the road from my house. I am between Stockton and Modesto.

                        1550

This machine says 1550 high idle on the face plate.

Who ever welded the muffler on, welds like I do, one wack with a hammer and it will fly off. In fact the ball hitch was welded on by the same guy as well as the home-made fenders.

If I get it I would cut the fenders off and grind it smooth, touch up the paint.

Then roll some 3/16 with 1" lip on each side weld that to a 3/8 or 1/2" bracket, and bolted it to the axle, so it can sit down close to the tire and never rub. I've done that for my tractors and that works out real nice.

My thinking now is I going to pay through the nose.
You know the more you guys say how good it is the more I"ll have to pay.
                        Thanks again,

With that tool arsenal you have in your signature I doubt that very much. I'm sure you're good enough at welding to appreciate the quality of arc these old girls produce.

                              Forgot to mention....

If you do buy that welder I would highly suggest removing the spark plugs, and putting a cap of oil in each cylinder, then turn the engine over by hand. Next take the igntion cap off clean the contact areas, and check the points. After you get her running do an oil change, change spark plug wire, and a coolant flush.

Neat little trailer it comes on

If you cannot lower the fenders much I would unbolt the axle and put the axle under the springs. You may or may not need to flip the spring saddles to the other side of the axle. The short axles are often straight and do not have a top or bottom to them. This will allow you to lower the fenders a couple inches. A lazier way of doing it would be to put 2 smaller wheels on it. They used to often use 14" or 15" rims, thus having a 27" or bigger tire. Now they usually use 13" rims and the tire is about 23.5". Some are rated 1100#, most 1360#.
If you decide to pass on it, I might be interested in buying it for a project.
