  • no tig output syncrowave 180 sd

My machine is about 7 years old, has low hours. I turned it on for the first time in 6 months and no high freq.,no gas valve & no arc. I checked the remote foot pedel micro switch and pot and they are both working. The foot switch cable checked out too. I noticed that the blue on indicator light goes out then I switch to tig from stick. I don't remember if this is normal or not.

    thanks,
    Carl Hawes

Could be a simple case of one or more corroded plug terminals. Unplug the PC board connectors and check for corrosion. Plug, unplug and plug them back in a few times and check operation again. Pay particular attention to the plug for RC2.

Checked all board plug connections, seemed to be ok.
checked voltage at remote plug on machine and curcuit common pin D to pin c equals 10v pin D to pin E equals 9v but pin A to pin D should be 24v but it equals 0v. when I short pin A to pin B I think the gas valve should open. it's not... It shows in the manual that pin B is a contact closure to pin A.

          Thanks,

Pull main board plug at RC6 and check for 24vdc at RC6-1 and chassis ground. If no 24vdc, pull main board plug at RC2 and check for 115vac at plug pin #9 (wire #9).

If you have 115vac at wire #9 but no 24vdc at RC6-1 I'm afraid the board is bad.

If you have voltage at both locations, recheck plug/receptacle connections from main boad RC6 thru PLG5 and to 14-pin remote control receptacle RC1. Make sure all terminals are properly seated in their plug/receptacle cavities and not pushed out so as to not make contact with their mating terminal.

              Pin 1 of RC6 equals 0v and pin 9 of RC2 equals 115vac.
              So I need a board...
Is this something that can be sent out and repaired?
              Or new from miller.

              Thanks for all your help,

Well you want to check RC6-1 to RC6-7 for the 24VDC

                RC6-7 has an isolated ground.

So your not going to read much testing RC6-1 to Chassis

Paper clip A & B on the machine remote amphenol. does the machine suddenly work?

Checked voltage across RC6 pin 1 and RC6 pin 7 still 0v more or less.
It's jumping around in the mV range.

Did the paper clip trick from A to B on chassis plug before to no avail.
I wonder if there is a 24v discrete regulator on the board that could be bad.
I'm sure that it can't be that simple...

                    Thanks,

All the controls on this machine are reading normal. No error messages, Manual amps control works as it always did. The only thing that I an not sure of is the blue ON light goes out when I switch to TIG. I don't remember if it did that before. I have not used this machine in a while...

Your checking on volts DC NOT AC correct.

                          Correct, I'm checking for 24vdc.

I'll be sure to let my 180SD know that.

Don't know why but my units ON light has always gone out when set for TIG. Manual indicates (illustration) otherwise and the only thing I can think of is the light is on in STICK mode to remind you the electrode is 'hot' and in TIG the torch is only hot when you step on the pedal. ??
