    The "inventor" was George Gilchrist of Gillette Wyoming, shortly after WWII when everything including welding hoods were in short supply.
    George signed his pancakes with an engraving tool under the face piece.
    For what it's worth he died in the mid-90's.

      It only makes sense that anyone that creative would be from Gillette.

      A lot of those old boys could do anything with nothing.
