  • Rebuilding heavy equipment buckets

Last week an operator called and let me know that he had broken the bucket.
I went out and sure enough, half the leading edge had simply snapped off.
I am contemplating the repair and will be using a T-1 plate, 12"x8'x1". What type of steel should I order(I'm guessing that there are several types of T-1 steel) and what Rod should I use?
    Thanks in advance.
    Please email me at "Shawnsapirate@yahoo.com"

Call the manufacture of the bucket and they will tell you what it is made of...as for the correct rod 7018 is your friend

That would probably be the cutting blade, not T-1 steel. If it has a bolt-on blade, it's the "frog", also normally not T-1 steel. Any blade supplier can get it for you. You didn't list your location .... Cutting Edge Supply is a big one, many steel distributors can get it for you, plus the equipment dealers themselves.
      Obviously, I'm just a hack-artist, you shouldn't be listening to anything I say .....

if your going to replace the cutting edge it's going to be AR plate #400 or#600 your going to need to preheat. and AR plate is well over 110 hardness so your not going to make it with 11018 rod anyway. I've done some root passes with 110 then used 7018 for cover. it's so hard to get info from the manufacturer. they want you to have them do the work but i know that the CAT dealer here uses 7018 for there repairs. I'm sure i missed something.

Oh I miss doing buckets. Nothing like taking 2 days to weld one shank on a PC1200 bucket. We used to goge the floor and sides out leaving just the lip or vice versa. Built some big old muck buckets. Bucket lips can be all different stuff but most commonly from the factory they are T1 or some foreign buckets use Hardox(sucks IMHO). I always preheat them to about 200-300 and weld with 7018. Usually put a root in with wire. Never found a good wire for doing the lip and adaptors.....but I'm sure there are some. E70m seemed to crack once in a while after some use. I guess cause it's not LoHy
