    Airco portable welder

I have an opportunity to purchase an AIRCO Wasp ll 180 amp with a kohler 12hp with leads. Asking price $375. Is this a good deal? Can parts still be purchased? Do they cross with Miller? How long has AIRCO been out of business?

      Stir,

If you can get the Airco model number I may be able to verify what you have there. Looking at my cross reference it is most likely comparable to the Miller Roughneck 1.

Some parts are still available for the Roughnecks but not all of them.

          Airco Wasp ll

All I could find out is there is a D after WASP. Does that help any? I would like your opinion. At the price being asked for this unit, if it cranks and welds good, is it a decent price?

that is a "Drooper" (constant current) type power supply.. and not really intended to run mig... ideally you will have a "constant votage" power supply to run MIG....

but you can do MIG with a VS (voltage sensing) feeder.... with this type of power supply..

                    http://www.millerwelds.com/products/...se_x-treme_vs/

look at the Voltage Sensing section.. in the Miller feeders..

                    http://www.millerwelds.com/products/wire_feeders/

Lincoln and others make voltage sensing feeders as well as Miller....

But for the price of one of those feeders you can buy a small mig welder that will weld mig wire a lot better.
A VS feeder on a CC welder will only weld large flux core wire fair. 035 MIG wire not well at all.

                        Heliwelder manual

                        A friend has a much-loved:

                        Code:
                        250 Ampere AC/DC Heliwelder
                        Airco 0475
                        1341-0178
                        on the Orange/white case.

and needs a manual, hopefully with schematics. I understand it may have been made by Midstates, Miller, or ESAB.

                        Suggestions?

ESAB, and you while you may find a wiring diagram, actual board schematics you won't find anywhere....

ESAB admits paternity but says they have no documentation left; they sent it to someone in California who has recently stopped supporting such.

Any suggestions for someone else; perhaps a repair facility in the Cleveland/Pittsburgh area? [Such may cost more than the unit is worth, I fear...]
