  • Docol R8 Tubing in Motorsports Chassis

Docol R8 is gaining in popularity... thoughts...??

TIG welding chromoly and Docol R8 chassis with Miller Dynasty 210 DX

Andy Weyenberg and Jack Elam of J&J Auto Racing walk through the settings required to TIG weld a chromoly chassis and a Docol R8 chassis, explaining the differences in the heat sensitivity of the two materials. They discuss proper technique for welding tubing, and the importance of proper fit-up and fixturing in this application.

    Looks like VERY cool stuff....

characteristics & fracture resistance much better than 4130 while retaining the same strength and weight...

here is a thread on the YB with some good info and links

I remember seeing their stuff at PRI back when it was in Orlando. As far as my typical application - rollcages for factory tubs - doesn't really gain anything for me. But if I were to build anything tube frame, I'd use it over 4130. They had samples of crushed tubing - across the diameter, and buckling under axial load, and the deformation without cracking was impressive. Building for strength is great, but you do need deformable sections in the event of a bad impact.
