			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div>Anybody else here doing this? I had to move recently, might have to again at some point. Moving is a gigantic hassle, just awful. Oh, you get around to throwing out stuff you really didn't HAVE to have, certainly a plus. But you also end up giving away some things you'd rather have kept, but don't immediately have a good place for or time to work on (my '76 Yamaha RD-400, sob!).<br />
<br />
Anyhow, partly in hope of making another move a little easier, I bought an extra-long (45') extra-tall (called &quot;high cube&quot;) cargo container. I planted it on a leveled pad of gravel, not concrete, and will wire it to the electrical service with a marine-style plug, so that the whole deal is legally &quot;temporary&quot; and can avoid building permits. The container has a roll-up garage door in the middle of one side, with barred sliding windows on either side, and a man-door at the end of the same side, at the opposite end from the cargo doors, which won't get opened nearly as often. It has a run of standard double flourescent light fixtures on the ceiling from one end to the other, and electrical boxes every 8' down the back wall. It cost me about $350 (with a tip to the driver) to get the container moved about 35 miles. The container itself, with the modifications, I got for the very good price of $4000.<br />
<br />
Because of the move, my would-be shop is just crammed and piled with boxes of tools and supplies and manuals. I'm about to begin dragging stuff outside while I set up benches, build storage shelving, and generally make a useable space. When I eventually have something worth showing, I'll shoot and post some pix.<br />
<br />
Of course, being long and narrow, a container-shop is sort of like having a shop in a hallway, with predictable pros and cons. Any big projects have to be done outside, under some variety of carport. I might very well get a second container, but am limited as to spanning two containers with a hard roof over an open space between in not wanting to have the authorities start telling me my installation no longer looks temporary. <br />
<br />
The majority of my welding gear is going into a smallish step-van that I also have to customize with shelves and such. If I do have to move again, I'm going to already be packed and portable!! Anything I put in the container will be screwed in place or otherwise quickly securable. If you have seen how one of these containers gets moved, on a flatbed trailer that works like one of those roll-on tow trucks, you can see that anything inside has to be pretty well held down.<br />

Anyhow, I'm interested to hear from any of you who have already done something like this, and have good ideas to share.</div>

It starts right up, runs great, but when the weld/power switch is switched to power it dies. What could this be? The switch?I read maybe a micro swicth connected to the coil? Has anybody encoutered this problem before? thanks for any help!</div>

<br />
After I mounted the hose reel and new foot to the front of the machine the handle was springy from the added weight.  So I took 1 X 1/8 flat stock and welded a 3/4 washer to one end and slipped the washer over the machines 3/4 rear axle an bolted the flat stock to the upper handle using the original foots mounting holes .... now the weight of the machine is picked up by the flat stock.<br />
<br />
One picture shows the handle being pulled with my come along to take all the slack out of the handle before I drilled the top mounting hole in the flat stock.<br />
<br />
Another picture shows how I built a place to hold a soap bottle but it made the machine to long so I shortened it.<br />
<br />
Now that the handle is higher and pulls the machine up by it's axles I can move the machine around allot more comfortably with no back pain. <br />

ive been looking around to get an aluminum tig set up so my girlfriends dad gave me a high frequency box to put on my stick unit. I get that i obviously hook the power cable to power cable stud and same for the ground side along with hooking gas up and what not.<br />
As stated i have experience tig welding aluminum but it has always been on his 220v digital tig welder. So my question comes in the fact of now that i have it hooked up do i just flip my stick box to AC and set the power out put? Is it really that simple? Second, once i have it up and running is it possible to convert it to utilize a pedal control? (I would like this functionality for tig welding aluminum and stainless)<br />
Third, and last, does it yield the same quality tig welds as an actual tig unit?<br />
(I understand that it is also based on how well i weld just want to know if the quality of me welding with it will match the quality of me welding with his digital tig unit)</div>

I was welding with some 3/32 6010 at 78 amps!<br />
Then decided to try a bit of 6011 on AC...... now here is the question, while welding at 78 amps with 6010 on elec+,, everything was fine.... when I went to 6011, AC. It was a bit hot so I flipped my hood and looked at the read out,,before it changed back, it was 104 amps,, 40.1volts???<br />
and then it went back to 78 on the display.<br />
Is this right? or have I got a problem?<br />
Machine is a 302TB EFI</div>

Can't find the Passport Plus anymore, and that was a machine I have pondered getting as being a lot lighter than my MM175, which is getting a little heavy for an old man to lug up ladders and stairs. The Passport Plus seems to have been superceded by the multi-process Multimatic 200. Why? The welding supply store fella (they carry Miller and other brands) mumbled a speculation that maybe a better welder was replacing one that was frequently in need of repair. True?<br />
<br />
Has the Multimatic 200 been out long enough that anyone here will venture opinions on it? How does it compare with the lightweight multi-process inverter welders from other companies? Any preferences here? <br />
<br />
A lightweight multiprocess machine could be real handy, but are we getting too mechanically/electronically complex for good reliability?</div>

This engine is drawing air from the front, but first has to cool the rectifier, and stabilizer before it enters the flywheel cooling fan which then pushes air into the air cleaner assembly. After an hour of run time, this air is super hot. Components its trying to cool are hot. Engine is not efficient, and surges<br />

In the winter , the air is dense, parts are easily cooled. Machine performs fine.<br />
<br />
Trying to figure a way to pull cool air in as apposed to hot air.<br />
<br />
Unit is an intersting but poor design<br />

Today i ran home from work at 3:30 and started cutting my 1.5 x1.5&quot; aluminum for my outboard bracket. I set up everything on a 3/4&quot; piece of plywood outside( no work shop big enough)  I have it figured out mostly on a cad program...so i had the &quot;sizes&quot; written down..and i had made up a woeden mock up first. I went to town by 9:30 pm I had this done:<img src="http://i40.tinypic.com/5drko1.jpg" border="0" alt="" /><br />

the 80/20 stuff i got from work...was obviously clear anodized.. and gave me a little trouble...plus it has thin and thick portions... but I used it because that will be bolted to the boat and I wanted a beefier frame than the 1.5&quot; square tube with .125&quot; wall. the rest is the tube i bought. the square tube welded real nice.... I played with the feed and finally dialed in a good weld....I got it all together, and i clean up all the welds and go over it again for stronger welds.  the middle frame, I will add .250 plate to to stiffen the sides and the top, because that is where the motor will hang Ill have a 3/4&quot; plate for the motor mount side....the rest will just get covered with 1/8 sheet.....i really love Mig welding.... I just think I will be able to use this machine a lot more than i was led to beleive over the years... the boat work doesnt have to be pretty and there is usually so much of it, Tigging it would take hours<br />

I was wondering if anyone here has any real world experience with welding 3310 or 4320.  I have a project I am working on where I will need to weld some alloy steel forged rings to a A106 pipe.<br />
The material will either be 3310 or 4320.  The steel will be quenched and tempered at 900 deg F to bring up the toughness but still retain the yield/tensile that the engineers want.<br />
<br />
My question is:  can we weld these steels with a preheat around 300F and a max interpass of around 500F?  After welding the parts will be blanket cooled (or could be left to air cool).  We can not perform a true PWHT due to limited resources.<br />
<br />
Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this!</div>

I'm actually working on an electronics project for someone, and its still in the conception phase. <br />

But can you get, and autodarkening helmet that is clear transparent? What I mean is the helmet I have, Normally its a light green color. The helmet I'm looking to get that's straight clear I'm going to be ripping the actual view port and electronics out of it and mounting it behind a transparent display.<br />
<br />
You usually can't see the dispaly in the daytime because of light coming from behind. My plan is I want to put the display on the autodarkener, And make it so that on a button press, behind the display will go dark for a second for the user to see the text well, then when they let off the button it'll go back transparent. <br />
<br />
All I'm able to find in the local welding shop though are ADHelmets with either green or purple glass in them. DO clear ones exist?<br />
<br />
Sorry for the long post and any confusion that it may cause. But with how it looks if I can get this 1 part of the project working for the guy, it opens up a couple thousand dollars more work to do for him.<br />

- I can get a new Miller Stock package # 951139 for $5000.<br />
- I can get that same Miller Stock package # 951139 used for $3500.<br />
<br />
- What would that used Dynasty be worth if it had Arc Timer = 100?<br />
- What would that used Dynasty be worth if it had Arc Timer = 500?<br />
<br />
I know the answers will be subjective but an average should be able to be drawn from the responses.</div>

I know that prices are all over the place for this, he is selling the machine for 3500.00 including 60cuft bottle, smith regulator, wp9, wp17 torches, 12 foot and 25 foot cable / hoses and covers, two ground leads one 25 and one 50 foot one is a clamp and the other is magnetic, a foot and also a finger controller, a bunch of consumables, and a cart<br />
<br />
in my heart I will offer him 2800.00 if it is all that he claims, 3100.00 if I can't leave without it.<br />
<br />
  I can try it out but never having tig welded I don't know where and what to start to look for, I have weighed purchasing a diversion 165 new instead, but I have a bad habit of buying the best I can afford, this way I am the limiting factor and not the equipment<br />
<br />

The wire feed keeps doing crazy things. I was using the Auto speed feature but when my son was welding it kept freaking out, stopping and clicking until you turned it off. Now on the manual speed setting I will stop welding and it will just keep spooling out wire. It does this regularly but not always. One time it just spewed out gas and no wire till I turned it off and one time it quit doing anything at all until I turned off the machine. I checked the connections where the gun is plugged into the machine and they seem ok. <br />
<br />
What the heck is going on with this thing? I bought this thing to replace my old Century 250 machine and it has not been pleasant so far....</div>

Over the course of the day I've seen an improvement in the control.  Nowhere near calling myself a welder yet but at least I'm getting to look at the details.  Watching the puddle seems paramount to me so far....<br />

The new WP-17 and silky cable seems a small advantage over the LS-17 stiff cable supplied with the Diversion.<br />

I have searched and read quite a bit, and I'm still not sure I have everything in my head regarding soem of the basics... before I even turn the 180 on.<br />

I have found a lot of detail, and a lot of options. I know I'll be coming back to read more; but for the short term, I'm hoping understand what I can do to be adequately prepared to begin learning.<br />
<br />
1. I intend to start off welding mild steel and aluminum only. I'm interested in buying basic torch accessories (tungsten, collets, and other parts that I'll need during the course of learning). I'm really just looking for a good place to start.<br />
<br />
2. After reading a good bit, I'm confused by the debates about the different alloy tungsten electrodes. What's a good place to start for a beginner? I want to learn the right way; but, I also don't want to go overboard if not necessary at the beginning. (I've read the cancer discussions about Thoriated, and not sure how fearful to really be.)<br />
<br />
3. Grinding the tungsten appears to run the extremes from hand to specialized grinders. I have a spare grinder, so I thinking about buying a new fine wheel for it to dedicate to the tungsten. I also have a couple Dremels and an unused diamond disk for it. I have seen different jigs and discussions; but, I haven't stumbled across any videos yet that show proper orientation of the tungsten while grinding to produce grind marks parallel to the axis of the tungsten... although I'll be doing more searching for them.<br />
<br />
I guess what I'm asking is advice on what type order/buy initially so that I don't get started, and then make multiple trips to the LWS (or wait for UPS).<br />
<br />
There's a lot of reading to do on all these subjects. I'm just trying to get a foothold.<br />
<br />

(That's covered in a different thread.)My question here concerns opinions on the best TIG glove for a novice. I think it would be best to have the most comfortable, best-fitting glove for feeding the filler... at least until I get comfortable with feed rate and hand-eye coordination.I have been happy with Tillman MIG gloves. I have read about Miller, Tillman and Black Stallion for TIG. Out of all of these, which would you guys recommend for good fingertip feel and control of the filler rod?Thanks for any help you can provide.Jeff</div>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div>Hi all. Let me start by saying that I've been a hobby welder for the last 12 years. Getting my only formal training.from vo-ag class in high school. I work in the oil field full time and do maintenance on my dads semi trucks part time<br />

  I've take every opportunity I can to weld any and everything.  I do a lot of fab projects, truck repairs, some pipeline (at work), trailer repairs, I've totally dis-assembled semi trailers and put them back together, general welding repairs. Excavator bucket facing and repair<br />
<br />
I've always used someone else's equipment, mostly the company's I work for.  I recently bought an older Hobart fabricator 300a power supply and a miller xr30 push/pull aluminum mig. I plan on getting more serious about fabbing for profit! <br />
<br />
Did I pick out some decent machines here?<br />
<br />
Can the Hobart be used as a stick welder when I'm not running the feeder?? It only has power to the front lugs when the mig trigger is pulled?!<br />
<br />
Aside from the awkward gun,  will the xr make a decent steel wire feeder?<br />
<br />
What's a decent suitcase unit to add as a dedicated steel mig? Pwr  source has a 6 pin connector!<br />
I also have a tombstone and a 110v Lincoln mig that I use for tinkering.<br />
<br />

I will not be putting a crane on it cause the heavy equipment repair i do is mostly welding repairs,but i also do hydraulic cylinders, lots of track rebuilds/repairs.  I dont get into a whole lot of mechanical.  I always have a way to load/unload a part at my shop and almost always there is equipment on site to do the same. Such as an excavator.  Also alot of my work consists of aluminum welding and fabricating,  which my chevy is used.  I may also be getting a big pipe contract so both trucks will be used on those sites.</div>
