I am embarrassed to say this, but I bought my Dynasty 200DX last April/May and finally just got the time to finish settng it up and use it.

I know this is a silly question, but what kind of sound/noise is the 200DX suppose to make when its running? This is my first time to use an Inverter based welder, so I am not sure what to expect, it is all new to me. So I plugged it in, flipped on the breaker and fired on the machine. I have never heard the 200DX before so I am not sure if it is normal or not, its got whine/hum with a electrical sizzle in the back ground (probably electrical current doing its thing). With the OCV at 8.8 the sound is steady, if the OCV oscillates from 8.7-8.8 the whine gets up and down. While welding it was kinda hard to tell, but it I think it got quiter and the sound went higher piteched, then when you turn it off it turns to a droaning loder to softer.

I know its hard to explain or imagine sounds, I am just worried and want to make sure everything is normal and running right. I know I just may be paranoid....

Here is how it is wired up http://www.millermotorsports.com/mboard/showthread.php?t=5286 , all the wire correspond to each other (didn't mix up the hots/ground etc).

I ran a couple of 7018 3/32 rods, at 80 amps (were I typically run them) it had the same bacon sizzle but with alittle more excitment, as if the amps were to high. I am guessing this is normal since transformer and inverter based welders are kinda apples and oranges, so alot of things are going to be different between the two.

The noise is normal on the 200DX you are hearing when at idle. It is strange that the 300DX I got does not make the "spaceship" noise.

Good luck. It is a good machine.

What you hear is the auto-line working, perfectly normal.

You will get to like the sound it makes. Try the little booger on a/c tig and see what you think....Star wars for sure!

there are lots of post in reguard to the strange noises the Dyn200 makes. miller should put some thing in the owners manual to warn the new owners about it.:p just another part of the transformer world i guess.injoy the dyn.200 its got many happy owners out there .:D

When I first got my D 200 DX it did not make any noise. After about 10 hours or so of arc time it now makes the noises you describe. The performance of the machine is unbeleivable. I primarilly use it for aluminum.

Mine too was silent at first but after approx. 10 hours started making the noise you described. The noise is more audible at 100v, than at 220V. The noise is still present after approx. 100hrs, but the performance remains awesome.

Just as others have observed, my 200DX has always made the spaceship noise, but the 300DX never has.

At the plant we have two early ALT304's that make the same noise as the 200DX, despite they are the same physical size as a 300DX. Running on 240, 480, single, or 3 phase doesn't seem to make any difference either.

The 350P is inverter based, but is totally silent ...

the TA-185 are also quiet. after hearing about all the noise of the dyn200, i was afraid some thing was wrong with my TA when i first got it due to lack of noise. just the opiset of what was expected can make you worry. i had been fallowing the dyn200 for 3 years planing on getting one of them so i freaked out when i got no noise. :p

the noise you hear is the freq generator, picture if you will. the mad sceintists lab swith the 2 towers that electric arcs pass between them. its the same thing but at a smaller scale and at a constant rate. the freq changes when the towers ( points) move closer or farther apart.

I was seirously worried at first, thanks guys.

On second thought if I were to have known this before hand I would have bought somethig else  Just kidding! But dammn is it ever annoying!!!

Haven't tried the TIG but hopefully it will sound more pleasing to the ears.

ultim8wldr, you pretty much hit the noise right on the head. Now that is all I will be thinking about while welding :D
