I am thinking of a new auto helmet and I noticed that the Miller BWE is going to be available in shade 8-13 instead of 9-13 and the grinding state will be shade 3 instead of shade 4.
Can anyone explain the advantage of this change? I have used one with the standard 9-13 that is a couple years old and I liked it a lot better than my Optrel. I think the lighter shade would be better for my older eyes but am not sure if that is the reason for the change or not.

Personally I like the idea of the grind mode in the shade 3. I have one of the first BWE with the shade 4 and it could be a little brighter. I would like it to have a shade 5 that I could set it in for my plasma as it always goes dark when using it no matter where I set the sensitivity.

I have been thinking about swapping my almost new BWE for the new version, I use shade 8 for tig in my optrel and like it, but the main reason would be to get the auto on ... getting tired of forgetting to turn the darn thing on  (caused by using the Optrel for so long I guess :o ).

Hi,
I talked to Miller's Helmet product manager and he said they are going down to a lighter #8 shade to make it easier to see the arc if your eyes are not so good or if you are TIG welding at lower amperages.
The grinder mode will have a #3 to that its easier to see.
I hope that helps.
Are the lower shades a good thing to you?
