Here's one of me fab'en pipe at the end of a pipeline, their wasn't a fab tent
around so they made one out of a side boom and a tarp:mad: ohh by the way
I think it was -43 that day and she blew pretty hard.Sorry to bore all you guys that have seen these pictures, If there was any work in Alberta then I could post some new ones, well I could show you some from the ranch but the new guys would pick up bad and unsafe work habits:p

why don't you pick up a little 10x10 fab tent for yourself. I got one of those easy up ones but it has no walls because usually I am just keeping the rain out. A person could buy some canvas and be in business with a tent for around $500 I bet I could have sold you a tent for double that on that job:D

Yes I do have one of those, I got it from costco ($250) its paid for it self
10x over but its not the best for cold wheather I think the plastic tarp stuff
likes to rip in the cold and when I use my tiger torch pipe heater I could get
get by if I had to but its more to keep the sun off me when she's +30 out:(
works well in the rain but then you have to weld in the rain;) I dont care how careful you are you still get soaked after a 10-12 hr shift:mad:

Rain gear man, I buy a new set for each couple of jobs, and even then, yes, I end up soaked sometimes because you sweat on the inside. I can get them on a deal here for about $30 for coat and pants included. I agree, if you're moving around all the time, the tent doesn't do much good, but its all a help. I wanted to make a tent that comes off the back of a truck, like those roll covers on dumptrucks, just couldn't figure out how to make it look half-decent. I'm not sure how cold my tent can be used in, I know mine is more like a heavy tent material than plastic, but I know I can't set up those plastic welding screens in the cold, the screen likes to break when folded up again. Come to think of it, there's only like 8 weeks of the year that its not too hot, too cold, or too wet:rolleyes:

Ya you poor bu*gers do have the rain to deal with. I only get out of the truck
if it means a couple of hrs before I am done the job. I think in my 7 years as a welder I've worked in it 3-4 times. Here in Alberta a rain day means going to the site/line and going home/hotel cause its to muddy they give ya 4 hrs
which helps pay you food and drinks back at the hotel:p It rained one time and I had my tire of my truck just touching the lease road into the site and
spread boss lost it on me:mad: said dont you ever come on site if its rained
It only rained enough for the ground to be a little wet, there big on the tree hugger stuff here:rolleyes: You guys in BC go for days and days before you see sun shine so I see why you'd work threw the rain

We wouldn't get anything done if we didn't work through the rain, it probably rains here 3 out of 5 days on average between september and may. We don't have nice lease roads liek you guys do either, we just have a path cleared of trees so that technically, you could get through there:rolleyes: Usually though if the operation will be there for a while they bring in lots of gravel or processed rock which works out well, enough to get trucks in an out at least, but more often than not it seems there's lots of mud. My winch on the front of the truck actually acts as a selling point to customers when they see my truck, means I might have half a chance of getting my own butt out of a hole without tying up some of their equipment:rolleyes:

Hope to make it back to Ab this summer, didn't make it out easterly last year, went up north and came down through GP and Grande Cache area. That GC area is knock-out gorgeous, can't seem to convince SWMBO to move there though:o Something about the high price of milk or something:o

You guys do have some of the best looking land around world wide. I love the
smell of the trees in BC. Its so cabiny out backish stuff that just makes me
want to sit down and enjoy life and what it has to offer. Here in Alberta it seems if you sit down the world passes you by:rolleyes: BC to me is like one big "SPA" and I hope to take the family out there to do some look see, Grace
my oldest(3 years old) would like to go camping and do some fishing. Sadie my
youngest just wants here mom but by then she be a little older she may want
to go then, plus we got to take the wifes new Durango for a trip:cool:

That is true, I do like the slower pace over here. It seems that in Ab, people change jobs just about every year, the ball is always in the air or rolling so dang fast over there you can barely keep your feet on the ground. Out here there are guys that haven't left town for 50 years:D I still haven't found the right place here though to settle down in, Up in Ft St. John it just didn't feel like home, Dawson Creek was better, but the morons who planned the town 75 years back put 3 or 4 highways running into / out of it, so its impossible to cross the street so SWMBO says not moving there. We might just end up somewhere a bit south of that whole area Like Quesnel or Mc Bride. Ever been through Pouce Coupe just outside of Dawson creek? Its real nice there, like Alberta foothills and lots of trees. Its weird, so much land yet can't make my mind up. One thing Ab has going for it is the wicked wild storms you guys get:eek: Last time I was up there in the period of and hour we had sun, wind, green clouds, then twisters, then hail, and non-stop lightning for the rest of the night. Both myself and SWMBO are amature storm chasers, used to do it in the supercharged T-Bird, so Ab always has that lure to it.

When you guys figure out the area of BC you plan to head to go camping, let me know and if I know the area I'll give some reccomendations as to sights and good fishing / camping lakes.

Ya we get crazy wheather here, Last winter it was about -5 and at the end of the day there was a thunder storm:eek: like they say just wait 5 mins it will change:D Okotoks gets as much sun as like Florida/Califronia does thats why they have those solar homes. They are the only ones like it in North Amarica.

All I know is that the only summer I came to see Calgary, I was looking into signing up with the Calgary police, and I kid you not, for the 3 days I was there in August it was cold and snowing:eek: Needless to say I did not sign up, which is good, cause I would be on the wrong side of the law then:D

I'm all for the Solar power, although i'm not sure what a Solar house is, is it solar powered off the grid? I imagine we'll live on the grid but have solar and wind supplements, maybe even sell some power back to the hydro company like some guys do.

I was debating weather to start a new thread for this question, but I think it fits hear. Every where I've worked, a "skid" referred to a unit that is self contained and can be off loaded so you can drag it behind a dozer or in some cases self propel with winches or other means. I'm talking equipment in general, not exclusively welders. Any way, I've noticed all the skids pictured in this and previous threads seem to be permanent truck mounts. (nice looking ones I might add) Are these permanent mounts or are they unloadable and just look permanent?
While I'm at it, since I think these are permanent mounts, is there ever a need for a self contained rig on skids that can be unloaded at the job site? I was thinking of a job site where you would have to go places unaccessible for a truck, deep in the woods or under ground maybe.

Heres some pics of my skid kind of plain jane. but I can take everything off the truck at one time only down fall is with my short box dont have room for air compressor or wire welding equip planning on building a trailer for when I need all that junk and can still set in the back of truck for smaLL jobs and pie work.

Here's one I built, it's something along the lines of what Burningbriar mentioned, it's under 1000 lbs, my 1/2 ton pickups handle it fine, can be offloaded and carried to a jobsite with a tractor, loader, or forklift. Not designed to be dragged, but I'm sure it'll happen someday. Box has all the essentials for most simple jobs, hood, gloves, safety glasses, grinders, hammers, basic tool set, layout tools, torch, gauges, leads, rods, etc etc. Maybe not as convenient to use as some of the others here have, but it's not my daily driver, it doesn't have to be. Perfect for small jobs, tight places, long distance. Everything can be chained and locked securely, staying at a motel isn't a problem.

Thanks, Coal...no alu, please. Wait..I'll do it if I don't have to PAY for it. :D

MMW, for now, I am using my skidsteer/forklift. When, or if, I ever get my shop finished, it will have a 2t jib crane in it. In the pic, I didn't have any weight on the other side hardly. So, I used the lift point on the carrier and the one on the TB. Works fair enough for the moment. With all the toys on it, I will probably be able to use the lift point only...or both. Doesn't matter to me.

Welcome Geoff. The oxy's are usually within 4" of the same length, never noticed any differences in widths. I have had some different hieght ones on the truck before, that's one thing nice nice about having them standing, hieght differences doesn't really matter.

What kind of work do you plan on doing? Maybe you might be interested in a welding deck I have for sale, if you need a welder I have a good one of those for sale too, and we're not too far from each other.
