I have an inverter and a separate gel cell battery set up on my rig for keeping the oven hot while not plugged into shore power.
Some of the inspectors I deal with will want to see the oven and check it for temp some never ask where the rod has come from. I need to add another battery, in the winter the single battery will only last 4-5 hours.

How do you deal with this issue?

You want to put it in parallel, NOT in series. I'm not sure if your gel cell is marine grade, but one way or another I'd be running deep cycles (or an equivalent) to get longer cycle life out of those batteries.

Just to clarify, when you hook it up the two batteries in parallel, you connect the - on the new battery to the - back on the first battery and the + to the +

Front panel, second 230 breaker from left to right, attach and twin the black lead from a 3 wire cord into this breaker (the line going into the receptacle), attach both the green and white wires to the nearest ground stud ( 6" below this receptacle), and your done, might cost $15 bucks. Does not let engine rev up, and does not effect your warranty!

Factory won't do it, just a welding repair center.

I was the first firm to figure it out and start installing them several years ago.

Yep, it would have been done at Kristian electric, I worked there for several years in the nineties.

Using a receptacle is nice, though they don't do that anymore, cause unless you take it back to them for warranty, they voided it because they took the machine out of spec by replacing the receptacle and removing the 230 capability. Should there have been a problem with the auxillary power, you would have no warranty with any other repair facility.

Twinning the breaker does not involve the removal of a receptacle, or any other wire, thus no warranty issues, and you don't loose the 230 capabilty. plus it's easy for anyone to do.

Can't help you in Calgary, besides your used to the extra long wait times at Kristian, You blow a generator, we'll have it rebuilt, sealed and reinstalled in 2 days.

After hours will cost you a 2-4 of Coors, not the usual $125 that other repair shops charge, not that it maters because we're generally open til 10 pm anyways

We stopped handing out cards a year ago, just don't need any extra work.

a good mount for a round rod oven is a mount for a 20 lbs fire extiguisher you might be able to see it on my truck maybe not but it works like a charm for any one who is interested

you'd need a LOT of solar panels to make a dent in the draw rate from a rod oven;)

We are located in Edmonton, no specialzing in any particulat machine, have to be fluent in all machines to ne profitable. though lots of Rigwelders at all hours come to our shop, thus lots of beer....... Lots of update courses, been doing this line of work for 14 years. We also sell control cables and remotes to O/P, Praxair, BOC in Calgary and surrounding areas. Demo's / displays are sitting in their stores.

Wow, you must be a really ancient dude, I know the station hands have been doing this for well over 40 years.

What year did you invent this???

Sorry, first to come off the 300D without cutting , or removing any wires, thereby ceasing your warranty. Not difficult to go around a auxillary pickup in a Classic 1 or sa200, though one must remove/ cut wiring to do so thereby modifying the specs and ending eny warranty you might have. After warranty, who really cares, cut away.

Modifiing , ie, cutting or removing wiring on a warranty machine is a great idea if you never plan on taking the machine in for warranty.

If you did have enough sunlight, you could set up a solar system to run that rod heater for about $1200-$1600 USD:cool:
