Hi all, I'm repairing several aircraft tools which have very short hex drivers, similar to an allen key. The original hex rounds off from use.

In my picture I drilled out the old hex which was forged on the end of the tool, then inserted a piece from a 3/8" allen key and welded it from the back side.

A simple test with a file indicates it is much easier to file the welded allen key versus the original allen key. I'm unable to fine any info on the web regarding a heat treating process, hence my question.

without knowing the excact alloy you are kinda shootin in trhe dark, but here you go- Stick a magnet to the are you want to harden, make sure you have a bucket of oil(motor oil is fine, even used)deep enough to submerge the part in. heat the tool with a torch untill the magnet falls off(very bright red), imediately place in bucket of oil(outside this step is smokey and stinky). let stand for a few minutes, remove from oil and wash thoroughly. then lightly heat with torch untill the part can light a cigarette, and no more, wrap with fiberglass insulation till next day and there you have it. This process wont work perfectly or with repetitive results but its ok.
