Hi
I own a miller 130xp and would like to find out what is the best set up to weld patch panels on my 69 Suburban with my welder? What is the best Gas bottle mixture, wire gauge and type and settings, any other items I haven't thought of.

Thanks John D

I am sure some of the more knowledgable people will chime in soon, but I will tell you what I used for my sheetmetal work on my 240Z fender repair.

I have a Lincoln HD3200 (110V mig setup similar to what you have). I used .023 ER70S6 wire with C25 gas. I used numerous spot welds and kept moving around to minimize warping. It worked great. I cannot get to the back of the panel to work it out, otherwise I probably would be able to use nearly zero filler. As it is, the filler is minimal. Take your time with fitup, minimize heat, make sure you get great penetration, and you will be good.

I hope this helps,
Joshua

Oh, I tend to like the Lincoln L56 wire as well. I tried Radnor, and another brand (Can't remember which one), and have come back to the L56 (available at Home Depot around here). There is a wire called Easy Grind available for body work, but I have never used it nor know where to get it. You might want to look into that also.

That's what I recommend as well. Make sure you are on electrode positive (DCEP) for the solid wire with gas, not the DCEN that your typical flux-cored wire uses. Make sure the metal is very clean before welding thin stuff with the GMAW process.

I just bought some of that easy grind wire and I got to tell you it works great!
No problem grinding any goobers from body panels if your not an expert welder

There's a Toll a couple miles from my house, but the guys there are dinks. I've been getting great service and prices from Oxygen Service Co down on Pierce Butler Route in St Paul. Fleet Farm has the best prices on 10# spools I've seen. They're rarely over $22 and have them on sale for 19 often. You can get all the 2# spools there too. They typically run about $8.50 depending what you get (AL/SS/etc).

Yes I have got spools from those places but if you want the EASY GRIND you might have to bite the bullet and go to Toll or try another welding supplier and see if they carry it cause I know Fleet Farm does not carry it

You should check out Oxygen Service. They're an esab dealer primarily because of their consumables (but they have the welders too). Really good people down there too.
