I'd like to setup my rig to do aluminum, but I don't have a need, so much as a desire to just play around with it. I could get a spoolgun, which would be a fair chunk of money, but I'd rather just get a push/pull setup if I decide to invest any money at all in it. I've read that folks have used MIG guns with short leads to do this, and I'm wondering if this can be done reliably. Ideally, I'd like to be able to use 4043 in .035 and .045, which I understand can be problematic.

I have an S-64 feeder that can be setup with U-groove drive rolls for this purpose. If I chose to do this, I could get another Roughneck gun, which I believe can use Fastip aluminum tips which are .005" oversized. These guns can be had relatively inexpensively off of ebay, but the shorter whips are not so common. Since I've never disassembled one of these guns, I wonder if a longer whip can be shortened by hand. If so, I could get a 12' or 15' whip and shorten it to 6' or 8' or shorter. This wouldn't be quite so inconvenient as I could put a lift eye on the feeder, tilt the motor down, and use an overhead hoist to get the feeder right up close to the work material. I also can't seem to find part numbers for a teflon liner for this particular gun. Do they exist? Any advice would be welcome.
