View Full Version : Monster Garage...Pippa...What is that thing.
Ok WTF is that thing they call Pippa. It did not really do anything on the show except ride it stupid bikes around the shop and talk about its wooden leg. WTF

Monster Garage is a foul word around me. Safety is nonexistant, in their little world. I would like to an OSHA rep visit them they fined a man $500 for not wearing a hard hat on a site here. On a per violation basis, I would like the % comission for suggestions of fines. Lets start with welding hoods or the lack there of and the safety glasses or short sleeves, tennis shoes and welding.
That show really rakes me off, Apologies to all, I'll shut up now

i agree they were making the armored car into a dunk tank and the guy fell and slashed his arm wide open. he went to the hospital. That show showa no saftey at all kost of the time they do wear hoods though. Orange County Choppers tack welds without hoods but at least they look away

One of my earliest raves on this forum was a post I started, called Protection for Professionals. If you do a search you'll find it, then you'll know why I feel so strongly about this subject. Again appologies to all.
Weld well, weld safe,

For a real metal build show I am recommending Forge and Anvil on RFDTV. More of blacksmithing type thing but the guy cheats and uses more modern welding techniques. The last episode had a gallerey where they had made a peice where brass and copper were welded to steel.

Really? I was under the impression Copper was impossible to fusion weld with steel. Even when you use Silicon Bronze rod with TIG, isn't it technically a braze?

Clinton welding, I am glad to hear it, keep up on the safety. As Spock would say, "Live long and prosper"!

Yes and no, It does but I wear layers of clothing from a short sleeve T,then a long sleeve T, then a flannel then my leather. If I wear only one layer it is somewhat cool. I have the tillman leather that has a snug collar with 2 sizes, i bought mine a bit big for the purpose of wearing layers underneath. I also have a pair of the Green jackets, and a pair of Green pants for whan I am welding in odd places.

Clinton welding:
Absolutely NOT necessary, but I get to weld in some fairly odd places upside down under a race car around a differential or what ever. I just wear them to know I am not going to find my leg on fire. BEEN THERE DONE THAT, not hurt but startled enough to be made a believer.
I say, safety is a process of thought First, action second!

What were you wearing that actually ignighted?
I weld in jeans, and have never bothered to buy pants because I have never seen the need. A good arc burn will make you plunk down for the shirts in a hurry. :D

Denim blue jeans. Actually the first time I ever welded aluminum, a large molten droplet blew out the back rolled down my leg and settled at the cuff slowly burned a 4" hole in my pants leg, which flamed almost all the way to my knee. It got my undivided attention quickly! Alls well that ends well, but Judie was rather ticked off.

my father lights up shirts like crazy i could never figgure out why until my 7" grinder needed new brushes so while it was out of commission i just used my fathers. i am right handed but my father is a southpaw so when i use his tools i learned to use them left handed (so i don't forget to put the handle back on the right side) when holding a grinder left handed it blows the sparks directly on your shirt tails, and if you grind long enough your shirt bursts into flames! luckily we have a uniform company that keeps a fresh supply of cotton shirts on our backs! we have found that the green welding shirts are the best for flame restance......until you wash them several times, washing them removes the fire resistant additive, then they become just as good as a 100% cotton shirt. i just use pants with a high cotton content (once again uniform company) and if i am doing alot of gouging i'll put on the leathers!
