How big of rod can you burn on 20 amp input 120 volts with one? What would be the thickness max on a single pass and muti pass on that voltage?
I never ran one and a guy just had to ask!!

ScottV:
Max output is 100amps so it should do 1/8" rod and up to 1/4" full penetration. With multi-pass it will do much more but with less duty cycle of course.

I thought it had a bigger input draw then 20 amps at 100 amps output. When running on 115/120 volts?

My 200DX draws only 20 at 120 amps so I think it is pretty close.

Looks like 115 volts/17.4 amps input for 70 amps output
115 volts/26.4 amps input for 100 amps output
I though it was better then that. It seems about like a Esab or Thermal-arc.
So lets say it puts out 85 amps at 120 volt 20 amp circuit, what does that
do to your above figures in rod size or metal thickness?

85 amps will get 3/16" and maybe up toward the 1/4" but in multi-pass it will definently get there. I run 1/8" 6011 on 85 amps in multi-pass on 3/8". Hope this helps.
My appologies about the draw rating oops I misread the chart, and you are correct. The Maxstar is a nice compact machine, if it will fit your needs I would like to hear field work reports comparing it to the ratings and to my experience with my D200DX. If you do get it make sure to email me facts and figures, thanks.

Thanks,
It was for a guy comparing the Passport to a Maxstar 150s
I am interested in a 120/240 stick welder myself.
I have a nice little esab 160i that is sweet but it is 240 only.
I also do not want to have to drag around my $4000.00 prowave for stick welding horse stalls. ;)

ScottV,
A 3/32" 7018 burns nicely on 115 VAC from the Maxstar 150 units on a 15 or 20 amp circuit. If you weld a lot of horse stalls, maybe a little Bluestar 185 or even a used Bluestar 180 with a 13 HP Honda is the answer. It is small and portable with a nice smooth DC arc. It also has 5500 watts continuous generator ouput. It will really push the Passport with ease!

I have a old AEAD down there all ready.
I will just mount it in my old truck again.
I like the thing pretty well, even after
owning a Ranger 305 g with a LN9 GMA hooked
up to it. I like 1800 rpm machines best no matter
who makes them.
I just wanted a lightweight stick machine just to have one. ;)
ScottV,
Nice! The Maxstar 150 is a tremendous improvement over the 140. The stick comes in just as handy as the DC TIG.
