Duh?
Think if you check the basic specs (readily available on this site) you'll see that all the Elite series helmets are "auto darkening".
Dang, that was a really tough one.:D

the ON switch for the auto dark turns on manually. You have to push the button to turn it on and it will shut off automatically.

I know what you are asking.
Yes you have to turn it on and it will stay on until the helmet doesn't sense any arc activity for 15-20 minutes.

Hey Andy, According to this description:
Weld Mode − used for most welding
applications. In this mode the lens
turns on when it optically senses a
welding arc. Adjust shade, sensitivity,
and delay settings as needed.
It looks like you can adjust the sensitivity once you push the on button and keep the setting automatically. Right?

Right.
I strongly suggest purchasing this helmet. since theres a weld cut and grind mode its basicaly a "one stop shop", if u will, for ur eye/facial protection. all u have to do is just reach into the helmet and press the mode button to adjust the lense functions to the task at hand. weather it be torch plasma grinding or welding. and the X-mode is a great help when welding outside cuz the sun wont shut the window down. i love it. im very happy i didnt settle for the $120 porformance series.
P.S. and the style is just kick @$$

So, when you're in the WELD mode, Is it pretty much considered an Auto On/Auto Off helmet. Correct?

If you mean auto on when the arc is struck, then yes. You still have to turn it on manually before you start welding. It will turn itself off after 15 minutes or so of non use. AskAndy provided a link to the manual. If you read it, it should help you decide.
I have a Digital Elite, and don't find it at all confusing to use.
