I really like the way the 309 rod performs on mild and stainless.. THe local welding supply house said it's a "problem" to use 309 on ss to ss welds, but could not say why or give me any good reason besides teh coloration of the beads..

Are there any pros or cons to using 309 solely for stainless welds? If the project is pure stainless i usually use 308 , but when practicing or making something that uses SS and mild combos i soley use the 309

So...give me some input here... I love the 309 and have tested teh welds with hammers and more and the seem **** near as strong as if i used 398, so what's teh diffrence in using 309 vs. 308 on pure stainless.

I also use 309 on mild to mild when i want a really pretty colored weld that will not get painted or covered up..... Mainly these are situations where strength isn't a factor and just because of the "what if" factor i will use only the recomended rods for their respective metals...

It's not that simple. There are too many grades of stainless. I don't know that you could call any of them "pure" stainless. There are far too many combinations to list them here.
If your LWS cannot give you satisfactory help, find a filler metal supplier (even online) that can provide accurate information.

That's right. Here is another link to some stainless info for Turbo.
