Recently it seems that every welding job that I do is repair. I haven’t dealt with all new metal in a while. During preparation for painting of the railing, the scraper went right through the post. It appears that that water got into the post during the winter and froze causing it to rupture. I cut off the bottom 4 inches and replaced it. I have uploaded the following pictures:

1. Ruptured post section.
2. Preparation for welding.
3. Close up of weld
4. Painted railing.

I am interested in preparation techniques for TIG welding of rusty metal.

Yep, stick. I would use 3/32" 7018 for that job without hesitation.
