 I told my boss that he needs to make sure the TIG welder that he buys for our shop can go AC. He said the one he is getting is AC. I clarified my first statement by telling him that to weld Aluminum you need to set the welder to AC. He again assured me that the TIG welder that he is buying is AC.
I knew he was planning on getting the Maxstar and that the Maxstar does not have an AC setting. So I printed off the PDF files for the Maxstar and the Dynasty and pointed out that the Maxstar is not the welder that we (the people in our shop) want or need. He pointed out that the Maxstar is an AC welder as it plugs into an 115v & 230v circuit.
It really sucks when your boss is not only clueless, but he thinks he is smarter than those that work for him.
He has ordered the Maxstar. So now our shop will have a very nice Maxstar 200 $3,000 when he could have bought a Maxstar 150 for a third of the price. This is the same person that bought a Spectrum 375 plasma cutter and no air compressor to go with it. But that is a different story.

And I thought all the loonies were looked up in congress and here we have one running loose on the streets.
Well when you need to weld some aluminum tell him it can't be don't with the machine YOU bought.
I think most of us have had a boss like this at one time or another.
My old boss wouldn't believe anything that you told him unless HE saw the problem. Tell him the saw blade is dull and need a new one, no it's just the way you are cutting until HE does it. Next day, new blade, " darn thing was dull, why didn't you say something?" GRRRR... Need lights for plowing, "No you are going to fast, slow down and you can see just fine." He runs the plow and the next storm there are new lights on the truck. BTW he took out a hydrant. See fine my @ss. Oh, this was also the second truck that "didn't need lights" that got a set that year after he ran it.
It goes on and on. I'm just REAL glad he was the one driving the other truck when the motor blew. :D Think it was, " the motor was old, leaked oil and on its last legs anyways, it was going to happen sooner or later" or the fact he had a 13-14K utility body doing almost 90mph on I 95. Hmmm...
Now you will just have a good excuse to have 2 new tig machines, the maxstar and the dynasty.

Yeah I'm sure Rob will get blamed because he didn't point out that the new machine wouldn't do alum, so it will be HIS fault.:D

Perhaps you could have him demonstrate to you and the rest of the shop how to cut with the plasma, without air, and then weld aluminum with the maxstar????

It's not to say that the Maxstar can't weld Aluminum, it's just not your first choice of machine to get the job done.
Can't everybody be as good a boss as me:D:D:D
I guess he hasn't learned that his most valuable asset is his employees and they have some pretty good ideas at times. If my guys ask for something, and it makes sense, its gotten. Of course it helps that I did the same job as the for years so I kinda know what they need. Worse to get a boss whos never done the job, I've had them before myself.
Good luck with the goof ball

Good bosses are a rear breed. I have a good boss. He tells me what he wants, I order the steel and consumables, looks like it came from the factory and he is happy. If he wants to add a foot of height to all the scraper bowls in the fleet, I do it. We both know frames don't last long doing it, but its his machinery. Dirt from one place to another is money. Took me six years to get a tig for AL fuel tank repairs. Used a wire feeder and took a long time. With the tig takes me 1/4 the time. Sorry your boss knows more about welding than you do.
