Spot welding

Maaannnnyyy years ago while working at the local Co-op, our Century rep(we sold the welders and battery chargers) showed us how to spot weld with a stick. Can anyone refresh my memory on how to do this? AC or DC? Choice of rods? If my memory is correct, we just shoved the rod thru the metal and pulled it back out.

My buddy 30 years ago had some tongs that were used with a stick machine. You just held the bigger one on the bottom and the small one over it and it welded. Crude but it worked...Bob

There werent any tongs or oddball tools. Just your regular stick cables and an electrode.
