How about some of you all post up some pics of your welding helmets. Im wanting to see what some of those miller elites look like when they're being used but I wont limit it to them. Post up what you got. (Im thinking about investing in an elite but I cant decide which one to get...)

my BWE is 6-7 years old and after replacing the lens covers looks very close to new still. should have replaced the lens cover long ago but didn't want to take it apart till i recently needed new battery's.:p
i'll try to pop a pic of it to post for you. i am very impressed with the paints ability to flex and stay on the hood............ yes i have dropped it many times. :o but glad i spent the extra $$ to get the stars and stripes instead of plain black. not as many choices when i got mine as there are now, i would not want to have to chose a paint choice now. too many cool options.

I bought the plain ol' black version and am happy I did. I don't worry about scratching the paint off or sticking my head into those tight quarters to weld just because of a few decals. A little soap and water on a rag and mine looks new again.

Well, OK. The Jackson I use for stick welding and the Optrell for tig. I never thought I would ever pay for an auto dark until I started tigging and realized what a great relief it is when tig welding. I only use the auto dark for tig and when I stick weld I use the old fixed shade. Don't want to mess up the expensive one with smoke and spatter and I really don't need the autodark stick welding.

An AD hood is another tool that makes life a little more convenient. They cost a few bucks (ok quite a few) but wear and tear is all part of the game.

Buy what you like, and if it gets scratched and dirty, it is getting used and paying you back some of the money you spent on it.

Well, bodybagger, you're in Luck! We actually have a new helmet design coming out today called "Lucky's Speed Shop"! It is black, with skulls, flying eyeballs and cobwebs. I think we should've released it on Halloween, but... :) It will be live (or dead, depending on how you look at it) probably this afternoon. Here's the link to check it out! http://www.millerwelds.com/products/weldinghelmets/elite.php

Also, on the subject of helmets, the president of "Sick ******* Choppers Inc." sent me the attached photo below just yesterday. He said, "I sent my fabricator to the welding supplier and he came back with your helmet. Almost identical to my paint? What a coincidence."

Pretty cool! :D

Platypus20,

Just what I was looking for. I already have a Speedglas 9000X and a 9002X, but what kind of review do you have on the SL? Are they worth all they hype? I just about bought one when I got the 9002X, but if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Thanks.

So? What? you what a picture of my plain jane huntsman 411P??

I'm not knocking the nice helmets but with my luck I'll spend $340 on a helmet and break it in a week. On top of the fact that I've used the sped glass helmets Recently to and they still don't cycle fast enough for me. Especially when your stitching with a mig. If I timed it right I could get the hood to be off when welding and on when not. So with that I still say auto darkening hood suck no matter how good they look.

platypus20
05-18-2008, 12:17 PM
Jason,

I liked the first SL, so much, I went out and bought a second, I also have 3 other 9002X helments. The SL is incredibly light, is auto on and is shade adjustable from 8-12, and also has sensitivity adjustment. The only draw back for me is the "new & improved" headgear, I didn' really ever get it to fit me properly, so I went back to the 9002X style headgear. As I said, it real light, is tight to the side of the head, helping to block backlight problems Only time will tell is the SL is a durable as the 9002X. I fix industrial boilers in the northeast, and the truck helmets are subjected to freezing temps in the winter and to well over 100 F in the summer, and the 9002X has been flawless. In the sevice van I keep the helmets in 5 gal plastic pails, with extra lense covers in the bottom, to keep them from getting broken.

i have never had that problem, you may have to adjust the delay if you want to stitch weld. never had any trouble dialing my BWE in for delay time or adjusting it for outside in the sun work. takes a minuit to set it, but after that its all good.:)

I currently have four helmets, and I've sold two already. My first helmet, a 29' roadster elite has been with me for almost three years now, I darn near learned to weld with it. It died a while back just past warranty and I wasn't sure if it would get replaced so I bought a new Joker Elite. As it turned out, Miller did warranty it so now I've got two Elites.:) I also have a Jackson flip front that I had to buy to use at school for the beginning part of the course, it works but I'm not too fond of it. I also have a MP-10 Inferno with a gold lens in it, this thing is amazing.

I couldn't get any action shots, but I took a few snaps of most of my collection to use up the rest of a roll of film. My Joker was at work so I couldn't get a picture of that unfortuanetely.

Which Miller Elite do you have? Old style or digital? And on the Speedglas what you mean has an amber tint. When it is dark or off or grind mode.

Shorerider16 what is the advantage to the gold lens in your inferno? Did you like it with the standard lens?

Gold coating help reflect light back at the work piece making it easier to see and durastically cuts down on the contrast. The end result is that the puddle and surrounding area are much brighter but the arc does not create a hotspot, allowing you to use a lighter lens shade. I use a shade 10 for everything from .035 hardwire to 1/16 metal core and T-9. I also like the amber tint better for stick and wire, the verdict is still out for tig, depends on material. The lense that comes with it is average, but any decent quality replacement lense will work well. Sorry I don't have a part number with me, the one I bought was a Harris, but there are many different brands available.

I much prefer this setup over my Elite for just welding. I use my Elite for tacking and fitting, as well as many repetive welds, but for "real" welding I wouldn't use anything else.

Just bought the Inferno MP-10. It is really nice, but I think I might order the Digital Elite Lens. I'm not use to flipping the hood down to weld, and a tack weld got me. It is lightweight and just as comfortable as the Elite hoods cause it is an Elite hood. Anyone that like the non auto-darkening hood will fall in love with ithis hood. the moment they put it on. Same head gear and helmet as the elite, but with a 5x4 shade10 lens. For $35 you get the all black and $65 gets the inferno. Will get picks up asap.

I first had a Jackson which was Cheap and I just did not like it.

I then got a better one with some solar power and really like the feature. Then I moved up to an Optrel and have NEVER looked back. The Swedes know how to build a welding helmet for sure;)

A feature I like is the push-on push-off grinding setting. There is a red LED just above your left eye that flashes on/off to let you know you are in grinding mode. It will only stay on for about 10 min and then it auto reverts back to welding mode. Saves a lot of time by keeping you from switching back and forth as your weld and grind...

Well Paul, it sounds nice, Speedglass, 9992X lens and House of Color Paint, yea, real nice and if you DON'T give is a picture where we can APPRECIATE you helment then I will personally beat you with a wet noodle from One0Hung Low Chinese take out.;)

My Optrel has a trick paint job that changes color as you view it from different angles. I would and I am sure that most on here would enjoy getting a gander of you HoC paint job.

Wow. There's some nice helmets out there. Mine's just a stock unit from Miller. They threw it in the deal when I bought the TIG.

Thanks for answering for me, as matter of fact I have lost that image. I have 2 speedglas 9002X's and I truely believe it is the best hood for me. I have a degenerative disc in my neck and lots of tacking in a shift I am in great pain the next morning from nodding and flipping. I have found the speedglas to be light weight and less stress on my neck.

Thanks for the compliments, I make no claims to be a pro painter, I am however proud of my hood.

Paul with good justification too. That said, HoC has been around for a looong time, all the way to the days of Ed 'Big Daddy' Roth.....;)

My Optrel is also extremely light might be worth a try on to you at some point in time...

Just thought I'd post some pictures of my girlfreind's helmet. She painted it herself as apparently nobody make one in her style. ;) In case you're wondering, she is a real welder and is working on her C-ticket.:)

Cute, the hearts and pink color. Good for her on her welding.

Thanks for the kind comments, she was worried that people would be upset. She's met a few people that thought she shouldn't be in a shop and didn't like the fact she had pink tools. Luckily she toughed it out and stuck with it.

Thankfully most people are more open minded and accepting. I'll pass them on.:)
