All day I weld stainless, but I had a customer come in with some mild steel pieces. Half way threw it dawned on me, I was using 308 and 309 filler on these pieces. There not structural pieces, so I don't I have to worry that much but wanted to get some suggestions.

LOL , dang welds just ate my flap disks right up.:p
think he might get upset about iregular rust patterns.:D
you should be fine with the SS filler on steel, well unless it was artsy stuff and he is going home to rust it.

As long as you go up in alloy you have no issues. Its when you go the other direction that problems come up ie 304 base materials welded with mild steel filler, that would be a no no.

I have welded s.s. parts to mild useing308 for sevral years, daily(as requested by customer) as long as you got enough penetration you will be fine. I have seen many peices of farm equipment where they must of only had s.s when repairing, an it was usally not them welds that had failed.
I've been taught you can use stailess to weld steel but not the other way around. I did some bend tests on 3/8 plate with stainless filler for the root and they did not like to bend....but they didn't break either:D Still, there are so many different answers to all these questions that you really need to do some real research if it's weighing on your mind.
