What do you guys use to purge pipe?
Any neat contraptions besides masking tape, stainless steel wool or shipping covers?
Where would be a good place to buy jacks or stands and wich are better summner or atlas?

I think summner's are sh*t if you ask me. I've had pipe walk off summners way to easy. I now use them to hold my grinders/remotes and they even fall
over when they are used for that:mad: I use GBR pipestands or GRB pipestands any ways they are the blue ones out of Edmonton Alberta. They work real well, never seen or used Atlas pipestands but I know summners
s*ck. but thats just me.
I dont know anything about purging pipe but met a girl welder who use to smoke pipe:p :D

We use purge plugs, on smaller pipe you stick them in the ends, on larger pipe 6" & up you slide them in to within a foot of the weld so you don not have to purge the whole length of pipe.

We use 3" or 4" thick foam rubber, buy a big sheet of it, lay out circles that you want with a black felt pen, saw it out on a band saw. I usually lay it out about a 1/2" big, for sch. 10 which will still mush down and still fit the std. wt. and heavier wall pipe of the same size.
Works well on chrome and stainless, argon will still bleed through the foam a little, but it is still good enough for the stainless's, when I go to a nickel base alloy like nickel or monel it requires a purer purge so I will tape one side of the foam with masking tape, not perfect, just enough to slow down the argon bleeding through the foam.
You can punch a hole through the middle and run a long rod through it with a big "washer" like card board on either side to shove it as far as you want up inside the pipe to get closer to a weld to cut down on your purge run.
About the only thing it doesn't work well on is a weld neck flg. because of getting it far enough away from the heat, but I still just run the bead and then pull it out to finish the weld out.
Works for us, fast set up and cheap.

I use foam pigs. They come in all sizes and cut them about 2" thick and get about 4 or 5 dams out of 1 pig . as for stands I use aba machine stands (abamachine.com) Jef

The purge plugs that I am familiar with are made from 4" thick foam for six inch pipe and up. A purge hose goes through the middle of one plug and a bleeder hose through the middle of the other plug. Both plugs are set back a minimum of 12" from the weld. If room does not allow for that then the plugs can be wrapped in aluminum tape to take more heat. I first saw these plugs in use on the White Rose Project and couldn't believe I never thought of it. It seem's simple but it works.

2nd vote for the aba stands. I just switched to them from my beat up sumners. A bit heavier and more money but way more peace of mind.
