We have to build quite a few spools for a job we have and I remembered the flange wheel Pipe Line Dan showed us. So I built one that fits in a chain vise. And it works great.

Coal,
Thanks, the plate warped a little, I am going to take it to a machine shop to have the face trued when we are finished with this project.

looks good Finney, ya after a while it will warp. I guess spinning pipe all day and the heat does get to them. I have seen some real fancy ones, mines just a free hand cut out of 1/2 plate, some guys get real fancy with a skull or rodeo picture or even a pin up girl. Mines kind of broke so I might get a CNC guy to cut mine out, I also may put backwards threads on the shaft so a guy can take the wheel apart for better storage, I will make the next one with a flip up/down head that way you can center it for flanges bolt it down and flip it into position, It seems as I get older I seem to get alot more lazy:o

Finney are the fans cause of heat? If they are I dont know If I'd be man enough to work there. I am good up to about +30 then I have to drink tons of water or risk heat stroke.

Dan,
I cut this out of 5/8 plate with a circle cutter I made for my 2050. I wish I had one of these 20 years ago, it would have made life a lot easier fabbing short spools. When you build one that the head flips up and down send me pictures. Yes it was hot and I am lazy, I had the fan blowing on the back of my head. I had a small blower I used to keep on the trailer but I can not find it after son #2 left for Wisc. What you did not see was the lawn chair and a 1gal. water jug with ice tea in it.

Finney, good job and way to improvise. You will find it will warp but thats no big deal it usually doesn't warp enough to throw you off. If you don't want it to warp as much find a rtg gasket (or bop ring) that fits the outside. I'll post some pics today to show you what I mean. Jef

Here's the pics I promised . My ring is 3/8th plate with a 1" soild shaft with2 pillow block bearings mounted to a plate and the plate is welded to 2x2 square tubing. I've bolted 250lbs. to this and no problems. The ring is a stainless rtj gasket it is heavy. They use them on the drilling rig for their B.O.P's . I'm going to cut my ring off and mount the rtj on it (easier to grip and prevents warpage) I wouldn't worry about getting your spinner trued it will continue to warp. I would make a ground on it so you don't bugger up your ground. It's a little rusty due to all the rain we've had (and snow) I'm planning on repainting it this week. Jef

Thanks for the ideas fellas. After looking at Wicked One's I think I will put my wheel on a diet and cut out between the slots. I know it makes short spools a lot easier.

Its good to cut them out just like Wicked's got his, thats where I say I've seen some real fancy ones, they cut out skulls etc. and make them look pretty cool. I have never been worried about them warpping If and when they do ya just make a new one. Wicked I've seen lots of guys use those BOP rings, kind of makes them look clean cut if you know what I mean,I'll be sure to get some when I head out on tour this winter. The bad thing about
not going hard is you never get to that stuff until you get a call to go to work somewhere then you cramp 3 days of fix ups into one 1/2 hr before you leave town:rolleyes: :o The wheel I have now is a 24" wheel, man its a pain to lug around. In my years as a "B" welder I've only done up to 8". Do you think I should make my new one a 12"ish wheel or should I have a 24" just incase?

Finney I am selling my house here in Okotoks, why not bring some of your funny money
and buy it off me? I think you'd like it here, I've got the Rocky's in my backyard, Calgary is 15mins north of us, mild winters, chinooks all winter long etc. towns got 15,000 people, low crime rate you should come chk it out.

Thanks for the offer Dan but I am happy where I am. I would like to come up and spend some time with you to see how you guys operate and learn some of your tricks.

I'll take you up on that EH!, but I'd chk out some other guys as well, I'd feel bad if you picked up my bad bad habits:p Did I ever tell you about the pencil marks on the inside of the pipe of the welder infront of you on test welds:p :D

Coal I made my wheel a 24" just in case I got to do some bigger stuff, but as of yet I have not spun anything bigger then 8" pipe. You still have to use rollers stands even with say 3". I just stick the flange on the wheel and then set some rollers up and set my pipe on top of the rollers and then I use chain grips to turn my pipe and weld it out:confused: Thats how I do it but everybody is different

A good lathe chuck works really well,u can get diffrent teeth for diffrent sizes of flanges or pipe. It works really good for spinning out O-LETS too.
