Converting to the PipeWorx FieldPro™ system has allowed Bakersfield, Calif.-based Sturgeon Service International (SSI) to increase productivity and gain high quality by eliminating slower TIG and Stick processes on their customers' pipe welding field applications. The new PipeWorx 350 FieldPro System delivers simplified cable management, complete control at the weld joint, arc performance optimized for critical pipe welding and is the new durability standard for field construction — designed and built to withstand harshest field environments. The multiprocess system provides conventional Stick, TIG, MIG and Flux-Cored processes. The system can also run the advanced Regulated Metal Deposition (RMD®) and Pulsed MIG processes which can help reduce weld failures and eliminate backing gas on some stainless and chromoly applications. For fill and cap passes on pipe applications, SSI uses the FieldPro Feeder, which allows them to use the Flux-Cored welding process. This feeder also can be used for conventional MIG welding if desired.

Lucero and the team at SSI found an option to bring RMD technology and other multiprocess benefits into the field by using the PipeWorx FieldPro™ system. The technology allows SSI to complete the root pass (with solid wire) faster than with the TIG process. 

SSI primarily services oilfield projects in California and the Western United States, often in remote areas where the temperatures and terrain are extreme. Dust, wind, heat and cold all challenge the integrity of the welding process on applications where quality is non-negotiable.

Because RMD maintains a consistent arc length regardless of electrode stick-out, the technology is able to compensate for welding operators who may have trouble holding a constant stick-out. It also enables a better view of the weld puddle, which increases control of the process and has made training easier at SSI. 

SSI welding operators can manage the selection of processes, material type, wire diameter, gas type, wire feed speed and voltage — right at the weld joint, eliminating the need to travel to and from the power source and with it, the opportunity for trips and falls.

The quality and the cost savings involved with the RMD technology convinced SSI’s customers of the process. The company can now finish products faster and pass that cost savings directly on to the customer.

The PipeWorx FieldPro™ System provides Stick and TIG performance optimized for open root pipe welding in the field and comes with complete remote control capabilities provided by the new FieldPro Remote. Connected in line with the electrode holder or the TIG torch with standard welding cables, this new remote gives users full control at the weld joint, including process selection, amperage adjustment and Stick electrode selection. The remote automatically sets the polarity based on the process selected and alerts operators if the weld cables are connected incorrectly, which helps to prevent defects associated with welding in the wrong polarity. This can all be accomplished hundreds of feet away from the power source, helping to improve productivity, reducing possible weld defects, and improving safety by minimizing trips back and forth to the power source.
