Stainless Grill Top

by D. Price

Project Description

A friend of ours wanted to build a stone fireplace grill combo and asked if we could build him a stainless grill top and hot coal door for him. we rummaged through a local scrap yard and found an old restaurant prep table. We only had to trim the drip edge off of it and it was perfect width and length! We cut the half circle edges out of the remaining scrap, and found some scrap s.s. angle for the frame. An old piece of a stainless muffler was trimmed and shined up for the smoke stack. A piece of 1/4 inch s.s. rod was used as a prop for the lid and it fit like a dream. The coal/ash door was constructed out of a piece of 10 ga s.s. also from the scrap yard. That with a piece of cedar for a handle and some hinges, he was a smoking and grilling fool! Materials were all stainless from a scrap yard. Total cost to build: $30.00 Stainless hinges were bought new locally. We used a Miller bobcat with scratch arc TIG torch for all the welding. A Metabo 6” cutter to cut all the stainless sheet metal and angle. A small piece of cedar was used for the coal door handle and an old icemaker handle for the grill/smoker handle. The job couldn’t have gone together easier with what we had to work with, it seemed to fall together. He displays the craftsmanship proudly and always gets comments on the work and the food he cooks with it.
