Project: Feeder Repair
Making sure your farm equipment is ready when you are is a constant challenge. Repairs can be costly and time consuming. If you have the tools and skills, you can get back to work quicker and keep your money in your pocket.
Damaged legs on a hay feeder is an example of a common issue you may run into. This round hay feeder sits on the ground with steel tubes acting as legs. Moisture has caused the legs to rust before the rest of the structure. Here are the steps needed to repair the damaged legs yourself.
Tools Needed
- Bobcat 250 Welder/Generator
- Millermatic 140 Wire Welder
- Spectrum 375 Plasma Cutter
- 4" Grinder with cut-off wheel and grinding wheel
- Hammer
- Vise Grips
- Combination Square (to get 45 degree angle on bends)
- Vise with piece of 3" pipe to form bends
- Marker
- Gloves
- Protective Wear
- Safety Glasses
- Miller Welding Helmet

| 1. | Cut off existing legs. |

| 2. | Grind the area smooth removing dirt and rust to prepare the weld area. |
|
| 3. | Measure and cut material being used for the repair. In this case 1/4" x 1-1/2" flat bar. |

| 4. | Bend the material to desired shape to act as replacement legs. |
|
| 5. | Cut the material to create flush joint for weld. |
|
| 6. | Insure new leg is straight and weld into place. We chose to use a Millermatic 135 wire welder due to the thin gauge of tubing being welded. |
