Miller Introduces New Narrow Air-Cooled Induction Heating Blankets for Improved Joint Access in Pipeline Applications

APPLETON, Wis. (Feb. 21, 2013)  — Miller Electric Mfg. Co. has introduced new narrow air-cooled induction heating blankets for weld preheating in pipeline applications with the ProHeat™ 35 induction heating system. The new narrow blankets are 4-1/4 inches wide by either 160 or 185 inches long, and are designed specifically for 48- and 56-inch-diameter pipes, respectively. Key benefits include:

  • Narrow joint access: easier to fit in between the joint and coatings or insulation.
  • Lightweight: narrow blankets weigh 35 pounds each.
  • Faster time-to-temperature: the kW per-square-foot ratio is higher with a narrower blanket, which could potentially lead to faster heating speeds in some applications.
  • Designed to be used in pairs for air-cooled induction heating applications up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Induction heating is used in pipeline applications to help drive out moisture and reduce hydrogen-induced cracking. The induction blankets are wrapped around the pipe and do not themselves heat up, as they create eddy currents that generate heat inside the part. This process ultimately proves faster and safer, provides more uniform heating and requires fewer consumables than other heating methods such as propane or resistance heating. It also presents less opportunity to damage coatings and insulation than these other processes, as the heat is limited to the targeted area.

The narrow blankets were designed specifically for the pipeline construction industry and should be used in pairs to achieve the full output capabilities of the ProHeat 35 induction heating system. The narrow construction of these blankets will provide flexibility in how they’re able to be placed with respect to space, providing easier access in both manual and automated welding applications. For more information on this and other induction heating products, visit MillerWelds.com/products/induction_heating.
