NEW DIMENSION NT 450 WELDER PROVIDES SUPERIOR ARC PERFORMANCE, MULTI-PROCESS WELDING OUTPUT FOR HEAVY INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

• Combines advanced technology with proven design

• For Stick, TIG, MIG, flux cored and gouging

APPLETON, Wis., July 12, 2005 - Miller Electric Mfg. Co. has introduced its Dimension® NT 450 multi-process welding power source, which features a new generation welding technology designed for heavy industrial applications. The Dimension NT 450 offers the superior arc performance associated with Miller’s inverter products but with the reliability of its Dimension 452 three-phase welder.

The Dimension NT 450 provides a CC/CV welding output for MIG, Stick and Lift-Arc® DC TIG welding, as well as air carbon arc gouging. It has a duty cycle of 100 percent at 450 amps/38 volts and an output amperage range of 5 to 500 amps and a voltage range of 10 to 38 volts. The low amperage output provides superior low-end TIG arc control, while the low voltage range provides excellent performance for short circuit MIG welding on thin materials or open root joints with beveled edges, such as pipe. A maximum open circuit voltage of 80 VDC delivers better starting performance for all welding processes.

The Dimension NT 450 operator interface is easy to understand because of its clearly labeled process and program select controls. An Auto Remote Sense™ feature eliminates the need for the remote/panel and contactor on/off switches. The Dimension NT 450 automatically selects these condition requirements through the 14-pin receptacle. The “hot start” switch is no longer required. This technology automatically enables this function when needed.

Heavy industrial fabrication and construction operations that benefit from the Dimension NT 450’s arc performance include: pressure tank/vessel fabricators, pipe welders, shipbuilders, refineries and foundries, railcar manufacturers, construction/agricultural equipment manufacturers and heavy maintenance/repair operations.

“Many of the applications and companies in heavy industry require two or more different welding processes, and the Dimension NT 450 provides uncompromising multi-process arc performance. This overcomes the single biggest limitation of conventional welding equipment,” says Jeff Hietpas, Miller product manager. He adds that, “To give users peace of mind, the Dimension NT 450 transforms primary power using the same reliable ‘copper and iron’ design as our Dimension 452 power source.”

The Dimension NT 450 weighs 376 lbs., uses three-phase input power (230, 460 or 575 VAC) and features line voltage compensation to keep the welding output constant even if input power varies by ± 10 percent.

Hietpas notes that Miller developed the Dimension NT 450 because industrial customers wanted the arc performance of Miller inverters, which sets the industry standard for CC/CV multi-process power sources, but are not concerned about the size, weight and portability that is associated with inverter products.

Fast Response, Yet Rugged

Where a conventional three-phase power source is limited to line frequency regulation (60 Hz), the Dimension NT 450 can regulate at much higher frequencies. This leads to a faster response and provides more positive arc starts and superior arc performance in all welding processes.

When MIG welding on stainless steel, an inductance control enhances bead profile by providing better weld puddle fluidity. Inductance control also minimizes spatter and improves bead profile when welding mild steel with CO2 shielding gas. In the Stick mode, the control functions as a dig adjustment knob, which lets operators tailor the arc force to match the welding application.

Hietpas notes that while the Dimension NT 450 uses solid state switching devices to control arc performance, “This power source should not be confused with an inverter. Miller designed the Dimension NT 450 with far fewer components and a robust topology. For added reliability, we encase PC boards in separate enclosures to keep them out of harsh environment.”

Miller’s Fan-On-Demand™, which operates the cooling fan only when needed, further enhances reliability by minimizing the amount of contaminants pulled through the machine. It also lowers noise and energy consumption.

As an added benefit, the Dimension NT 450 offers an energy efficiency rating of more than 82 percent. This is approximately three to seven percentage points better than conventional three-phase CC/CV power sources, which means that the Dimension NT 450 provides a return on investment through lower utility bills. Considering that large manufacturers typically own several dozen to more than 1,000 welders, savings can amount to thousands of dollars per year.

The Dimension NT 450 power source is covered by Miller’s True Blue® three-year factory warranty, with the original main power rectifier parts warranted for five years.
